Springtime in Kansas (and Missouri)

There’s plenty for the outdoors-lovers to take advantage of in and around the state. Kansas City alone offers a variety of gardens and parks where you can enjoy nature in bloom.

For example, Loose Park is right near Country Club Plaza. This delightful urban park offers a wading pool for warm days, and the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden.

Another KCMO gem that offers opportunities for outdoor frolicking is the city’s botanical garden. Powell Gardens. Offering 915 acres of hills and meadows, there are plenty of options for nature lovers. From a nature trail, to modern architectural landmarks, to classes for folks of all ages, Powell Gardens has it all.

While it’s breathtaking to behold in the botanical gardens in the spring, the park is open year-round. The hours change depending on the time of year, so make sure you check before you go!

There’s even something for hikers! If you’re interested in hiking around Kansas City, you’ve got some choices.

In Olathe, there’s the Ernie Miller Nature Center, complete with a 500-gallon aquarium. Mill Creek Streamway Park and Cedar Lake Park are also nearby.

Urban hikers can also make the short trip out to Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. This space offers 5 miles of paved and unpaved trails for curious wanderers. This one offers opportunities for nature lovers of all ages, so bring the family!

Why Should Kansas Sunflowers Get All of the Attention? Tulips in Kansas Deserve Their Own Place in the Sun!

Of course, we’re all familiar with the iconic Kansas sunflower. However, did you know Kansas also boasts some lovely tulips?

spring festivals in kansas tulip field

Topeka, Wamego, and Wichita are all home to beautiful tulip blossoms in the spring. Tulip Time in Topeka is one of the annual spring festivals in Kansas. Three locations throughout the city are dedicated to a celebration of these gorgeous spring flowers during this festival.

Visitors are often surprised to learn that springtime in Kansas is notable for its abundance of tulips. The Tulip Festival in Wamego is a combination flower festival and craft show.

Visitors come in the thousands to see these tulip blooms–direct from Holland! Their European origins are highlighted by the city’s iconic 40-foot 19th century Dutch Mill. The mill is part of Wamego’s living history museum Prairie Village.

March in Wichita offers its own tulip attractions: at the Wichita Botanica and its Bartlett Arboretum. The display of over 50,000 tulips comes with an additional benefit. On top of the aesthetic value of thousands of colorful flowers, you can buy the bulbs after the fact!

Spring Festivals in Kansas

Aside from the tulips, springtime in Kansas offers a variety of festivals, with something for everyone.

Throughout the state, March typically sees St. Patrick’s Day parades popping up everywhere. Of course, many of these were cancelled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, these parades are long-standing Kansas traditions.

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is home to more than hiking opportunities. In April, it’s also the site of the Kite Fest on the Prairie. It wasn’t in the spring, but we’ve been known to host some pretty epic kites at our Lawrence vineyard, too!

Also at Overland Park: monthly Local Life Celebrations. These regular events are designed to introduce visitors to all its unique offerings. Local businesses and restaurants make themselves available to curious explorers.

Check local listings for dates, times, hours, and any additional updates for these and other spring festivals in Kansas!

Museums in Kansas (Okay, and Missouri, Too…)

Springtime in Kansas isn’t all outdoors fun, however. If your allergies are bothering you or you’re stuck inside during an April shower, don’t fret. There are a variety of museums around the state available to great indoorsmen and women of all stripes!

The Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City offers something for art lovers of all kinds and ages. See treasures from all over the world: from the recreation of a medieval monastery cloister, to an actual mummy, and more!

For the movie buff in your life, head out to visit the Wizard of Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas. It’s a fun walk down the Yellow Brick Road for fans of the movie or the book. See recreations of your favorite scenes, as well as fascinating memorabilia from all over the world!

Did you know that Kansas is home to the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame? A visit to this museum is a great stop to make during springtime in Kansas. They offer educational programs for learners at all levels, including the Barnyard Babies Family Festival in April!
