Hiring in the Time of COVID: The Struggle is Real

hiring during covid

As Kansas prepares to put the worst of the pandemic behind us, we are still dealing with a variety of domino effects resulting from COVID-19. Even as more and more Kansans get vaccinated, things reopen even more, and mask mandates are lifted, not everything is back to normal yet.

Almost any small business owner you talk to these days tells a similar story. Hiring right now is rough. If you’re curious about why that is, or what steps business owners can take to fix their problems, we’ve put together a quick explainer, along with some recommendations.

If we can help out even one other small business, it’s all been worth it!

What’s your virtual recruiting game like?

If you feel like you’ve got jobs you can’t even give away, it’s worth looking at your digital recruiting strategy.

Man applying for a job on smartphone

This doesn’t have to mean anything fancy. Your problem could be as simple as a lousy mobile interface. Job matching site Monster.com cites a Pew research finding that over half of job applicants apply to jobs over a mobile device. That means if your website or application aren’t mobile-friendly, you’re narrowing your candidate pool.

Make sure your website, job description, and application process are smooth, convenient, and feature as few clicks as possible.

Brand Consistency

Any applicant worth their salt is going to do their homework on your business or organization. So if you have a voice, a message, company values, or a story you’re trying to get out there, make sure it’s consistent across platforms. That means your website, social media presence, and any other public-facing materials you have.

Your social media presence should keep in mind that you’re trying to present an exciting-but-truthful look at your business. Put employees front and center, give them a chance to tell their stories and share their experiences. Highlight customer testimonials so job candidates feel like they’re applying to something rewarding and meaningful.

Virtual open houses

Whether people are simply staying close to home due to the pandemic, or months of lockdown have simply de-conditioned them to get out of the house and go places, a virtual open house can work to your advantage.

By showing them your setup, how you operate, and a general sense of how things work overall, you can help prospects make the decision if the commute is going to be worth it.

The fact that a potential future employer is taking the time to meet them where they’re at in order to answer their questions in real time will show that you’re an organization that cares about their employees’ quality of life.

Monster.com found that younger job seekers didn’t just prefer video as part of the job search, application, and interview process. They actually expected it. So don’t let your allergy to video and Zoom prevent you from recruiting new, young talent!

The restaurant business in the time of COVID

Now, as a winery and dining establishment ourselves, we are particularly interested in the struggles in our industry in light of the pandemic.

It’s no secret a lot of places closed – over 110,000, in fact. We’re thankful to be standing and thriving, and we owe it all to our amazing community and customers.

There are certain factors that restaurateurs–and similar types of businesses–can keep in mind to make themselves the kinds of places that will appeal to both customers and prospective employees alike!

According to FastCasual, a restaurant industry news site, nearly half of restaurateurs are having difficulty filling positions due to the pandemic. People retreating from cities, the specific concerns of communities of color that have been hard hit by the pandemic, and the uncertainty of the dining industry itself have made work in restaurants.

Appealing to the Post-COVID Worker

With these changes in mind, employers should make benefits a big part of their recruitment pitch. FastCasual recommends that restaurants base their job descriptions on a commitment to the following

  • Health
  • Security
  • Wellbeing
  • Happiness

If you can convincingly demonstrate to potential employees that you have taken serious measures to take care of these four factors, you may notice more applicants.

This is also where things like video open houses come in handy. They’re your opportunity to show customers and employers that you take their overall wellness and satisfaction seriously.

Hiring at Z&M

We’re always interested in hiring folks who are a little bit Twisted and welcoming them into our fun-loving community of wine enthusiasts! If you heard Twisted, fun, and wine and thought, “That sounds like me,” you just might be Z&M material.
